Promoting Guinea-Bissau’s Emerging Technology Ecosystem
During the month of September, InnovaLab, the first startup-accelerator in Guinea-Bissau, will host, in partnership with the Next Einstein Fórum (NEF), a week of science and technology. This event is aimed at promoting new technologies on the African continent.
The second edition of the NEF Africa Science Week (ASW) will take place in 30 countries in Africa. Following the successful first edition that saw Africa Science Week take place in 15 countries (Rwanda, Morocco, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Brazaville, Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa) the organizers decided to extend the program to include more African countries, including Guinea-Bissau.
NEF Africa Science Week is Africa’s annual three-day celebration of science and technology and thousands of individuals – from students, to scientists to technologists – to encourage citizens to get involved, become interested in science all across the continent. NEF Africa Science Week is designed for all age groups and brims with events and activities and talks and shows for every age group. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of African scientists to the body of knowledge of science and elicits an interest in science pursuits among the general public.
Led by NEF Ambassadors, this signature program is designed for many age groups and provides an opportunity for citizens to engage in everyday science. The program is designed to instill a curiosity of learning and interest in STEM pursuits among the public and allows young Africans, especially women, to acknowledge that they, too, can become excellent scientists and technologists by pursuing these fields.
NEF Ambassadors are the NEF’s young science and technology champions, one from each African country. Adulai Bary from InnovaLab was selected as the 2017-19 Next Einstein Forum Ambassador for Guinea-Bissau from an application pool of over 300 applications. During Africa Science Week, NEF Ambassadors in countries across Africa will organize three major events throughout the week.
The objectives of the ASW activity plan, as outlined by InnovaLab, the host of the event, are to increase engagement around initiatives that are at the core of both InnovaLab and NEF’s mission, including: entrepreneurship and innovation, technology ecosystem development, and startup mentorship & incubation.
